The "Compliance License Key" Scam Targeting Shopify Clients

Scammers are impersonating Shopify experts, including us, to trick store owners with fake compliance warnings. Here's what the email looks like and how to spot it immediately ...

A convincing scam email is circulating that targets Shopify store owners. It claims to be from a Shopify agency or expert you've worked with, warns that your site's "Compliance License Key" was never fully configured, and offers to fix it urgently, for a fee, or worse, with access to your store.

This email is a scam. There is no such thing as a "Compliance License Key." The technology it describes does not exist. And we, like every other legitimate Shopify expert, did not send it.  If you look at it closely it probably comes from a gmail or other public domain, NOT from your Shopify expert.

This isn't targeting just our clients. Scammers are mass-sending this email while impersonating Shopify experts and agencies across the industry.  If you think you might be dealing with these people, your first step is to remove their access to your store ASAP, then contact Shopify help.
