At eChic we focus on evidence based approaches to everything from the best colour for the text on your site to the causes that make a huge difference to the lives of the worlds poor, and the best way to donate.
Why malaria? Malaria kills more than one million people every year, yet nobody need die. Half a billion people fall ill. 70% of the deaths are children under 5 (That is the equivalent of seven 747s of children dying from malaria each day) Malaria is the world's single largest killer of pregnant women 90% of the deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa.
Yet malaria is totally preventable and treatable. Nobody need die. Prevention is better than treatment. The most effective means of prevention is sleeping under a mosquito net Specifically a Long-Lasting Insecticide treated Net (LLIN) Each net costs US$3 Every 50-250 nets distributed and installed equals 1 life saved.
Why the Against Malaria Foundation?
1. AMF is highly cost-effective at using donor funds to prevent illness and avoid deaths from malaria. They do this in three ways:
First, AMF has a clear focus on a specific intervention, anti-malaria bednets, and particularly long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Anti-malaria bednets reduce illness and prevent deaths. This means the potential impact on lives saved and health improved per dollar donated is high.
Second, AMF has an operating model that has proved highly effective: a lean organisational structure, significant leveraging of technology and a pro bono partnership and distribution partner model. This means our costs are exceptionally low.
Third, we place great emphasis on the preparation, carrying out and follow up of distributions to ensure the potential impact of distributing nets is realised. We report on this transparently and in detail.
2. All three of (arguably) the world’s leading independent charity evaluators rate AMF as their leading charity in the world - in any sector.
