Shopify is changing a few things about contact information at CHECKOUT - here's what you need to know

From June 3 2026, Shopify is making some small changes to the information it asks your customers for when they check out. Nothing big, but it's worth knowing about so there are no surprises.

If you've already gone in and set these fields yourself, you're sorted. Your settings stay as they are. But if you've left things on the default, the out-of-the-box settings Shopify gave you,  some of those are about to change.

What's changing
Contact method: email or phone is defaulting to email only

Shopify will ask customers for their emailaddress rather than giving them the choice of email or phone.

First name: optional → required

Customers will need to pop in their first name before they can complete their order. Shopify is confident this won't put people off buying.

Phone number: hidden → visible (but not required)

A phone number field will now show up at checkout. Customers can leave it blank if they'd rather not share it.

Does this affect your store?
Only if you haven't already customised these fields yourself. If you've been in and made changes, those stay put - Shopify won't override what you've already set.

If you're not sure whether you've ever changed these settings, it's worth having a quick look. It only takes a couple of minutes.

If you've already told Shopify what you want, it'll stay that way - no problem. But if things have changed, or you've never looked, it's a good time to go and check. Head to Settings → Checkoutin your Shopify admin and have a look around.

What to do
It's pretty straightforward:

Log into your Shopify admin
Go to Settings (bottom left), then click Checkout
Have a look at the contactmethod, first name, and phone number settings
If you're happy with the new defaults, you don't need to do anything at all
If you'd rather keep things as they are, Shopify will show you a notice before June 3 with the option to opt out

Shopify is rolling this out gradually from June 3, so you may not see it straight away. But if you want to opt out, do it before then just to be safe.

If in doubt, we can help!
